Neem oil is a favourite for vegetable growers because it controls a wide range of pests while being suitable for edible crops when used correctly. Here’s how to use it safely from seedling to harvest.
What it protects against
Aphids, whiteflies, mites, caterpillars, leaf miners and many fungal diseases — the usual threats to tomatoes, brinjal, okra, beans, gourds and leafy greens. See our guides on neem oil for tomato plants and neem oil for aphids.
Using it safely on food crops
- Mix water-soluble neem oil fresh and spray both leaf surfaces. See the dilution chart.
- Spray in the early morning or evening, never in strong sun.
- Observe the pre-harvest interval on the label, and wash produce before eating.
- Rotate sprays every 7–14 days depending on pest pressure.
Because neem breaks down quickly in sunlight, it doesn’t leave the lasting residues that synthetic pesticides can — one reason it fits organic and export-sensitive growing.
Can I eat vegetables sprayed with neem oil?
Yes, after the label’s pre-harvest interval and a normal wash.
Is neem oil safe for pollinators?
Spray in the evening when bees aren’t active to protect them.
